Hydro CIRCAL 100R – 100% recycled end-of-life aluminium

As part of Hydro, we are the first aluminium building system company able to produce profiles made from 100% recycled end-of-life aluminium (post-consumer scrap) - Hydro CIRCAL 100R. It is now possible to provide architectural solutions with near-zero carbon footprint. Hydro CIRCAL 100R has a carbon footprint among the lowest in the world: only 0.5 kg CO2 per kilo of aluminium.

Hydro CIRCAL 75R – 75% recycled end-of-life aluminium

Hydro CIRCAL 75R contains a minimum of 75 % post-consumer scrap. When guaranteeing more than 75 % recycled content, Hydro exclusively refers to aluminium that has reached its end-of-life as a product in use and is brought back into the loop. Hydro CIRCAL 75R has a low-carbon footprint of 2.3 kg CO2 per kilo of aluminium, 73 % less than the European average.

Aluminium is infinitely recyclable. Its quality and material properties are never lost. Furthermore, melting down end-of-life aluminium uses just 5 % of the energy required for primary aluminium production. So the higher recycled content of post-consumer scrap, the better it is for our cities and the environment.

As a customer of recycled aluminium, you should always ask: Where does the recycled aluminium come from?

If the recycled aluminium is from recycled windows, doors, façades (post-consumer scrap), its CO2 footprint is close to zero, as recycling aluminium only requires 5% of the energy it takes to produce it the first time around.

Aluminium can also be recycled from production waste, or pre-consumer scrap. As this aluminium has never been used in a product and had a useful life before, it carries with it the same CO2 footprint as the original aluminium – plus 5% from the recycling process.

Some aluminium producers merge pre- and post-consumer scrap in their calculations, which could incentivize waste production and misrepresent high carbon footprint aluminium as zero carbon scrap.
